Key stats

  • Provided a guaranteed income to the College
  • Increased revenue through expansion and community projects
  • Implemented a workplace/nursery partnership

Gloucestershire College is a college of further and higher education in Gloucestershire with two main campuses, in Cheltenham and Gloucester.

The College had been running two nurseries on their sites and both were struggling with low occupancy rates and revenue. In early 2014 they decided to find an expert partner to run the nurseries for them. We were delighted to be awarded the contract and, in November 2014, we started the process of moving 30 of the existing nursery staff into our family through a TUPE transfer.

During the changeover, we focused on:

  • ensuring a smooth transition for the incoming team, the children and their parents
  • conducting a full governance review of the operation
  • providing our new colleagues with support and training in our practices and policies
  • supporting and reassuring the team during a period of change management
  • communicating with staff, parents and the College to keep everyone up to date on our progress

Since the two nurseries came into our care, things have improved across the board

Financially

  • Increased the number of private spaces available at the nurseries to compensate for a decline in student numbers – these private spaces now account for 75% of the total occupancy
  • Increased the number of available places at the Cheltenham nursery from 40 to 52, increasing revenue by around £117,000 pa
  • Provided a guaranteed income to the College
  • Achieved a 38% increase on projected income in the 2020/21 financial year
  • Implemented an electronic billing system which resulted in increased efficiencies and decreased debt

Operationally

  • Retained 90% of the team that we brought in under the TUPE transfer
  • Developed an exciting outdoor learning programme
  • Introduced a library system to enhance the children’s language development
  • Implemented the ‘myHappymind’ wellness programme, which supports mental wellbeing in children
  • Set up a Workplace Nursery Partnership between Superdry and Gloucester College, increasing revenues for the partnership and delivering savings for employees
  • Generated additional income streams by providing Holiday Club services
  • Launched a 24/7 booking app to give parents access to ad-hoc, flexible childcare

"We started working with My Ohana (formally Tinies) in 2014 and it’s been game changing for us, it’s a partnership in the true sense of the word. It’s meant that we can focus on our core business whilst benefitting from the profits made – it’s a win-win for both of us."
